The 2019 Australian Junior U16 Championships held recently in the Northern Territory showcased the talent of local Geelong and Pivot City player, Jamie Ryan. Jamie, one of Geelong’s most talented juniors has seen a lot of court time so far this year with his Pivot, Supercats and Victoria commitments.

Jamie was one of 10 players selected for the Vic Country squad to compete against the best teams from VIC, TAS, ACT, NSW, QLD, SA, WA and NT. They won 3 of their 5 games to finish third in their pool. Success in the finals, winning by 5 against QLD and by 9 against ACT, secured the team a place in the grand final game against Vic Metro. They fought hard, but unfortunately went down to Vic Metro 90-63 to come home with the silver medal, an impressive achievement.
Although Jamie was rested in both finals due to injury, he was impressive across the week, including game 2 against NT where he finished with a double double, 11 rebounds and 10 points.
Earlier in the year Jamie was selected for the Bushrangers team for the Australian Country Junior Basketball Cup in Albury. They finished the weekend undefeated to win the gold medal game 43 – 69 against SA Magpies. Jamie scored double figures in 4 of the 8 games.
Pivot welcomed Jamie to the U16 Division 1 domestic boys’ team last year. Coach Nick van der Klooster is impressed with how easily he fit into a team that’s been together for a few seasons.
“Jamie fitted into our team straight away, he’s easy to coach, listens, is unselfish on court and his skill and athleticism means we have more options on court.”
He added, “We go deeper with Jamie in the team, he just gets out there and works hard. We have had a great season so far and the grand final is within reach”.
